Coercive Control Training for Family Court Professionals

MISSION & VISION

Our mission is to improve outcomes for domestic abuse survivors and children navigating family court proceedings and custody evaluations.

Our vision is to transform systems and structures that inhibit survivors and children from thriving after leaving abusive family systems.

At the micro-level, we support survivors and their legal counsel with testimony and exhibit preparation, as well as wraparound writing and evidence organization during the custody evaluation and trial preparation processes.

At the macro level, we educate family court professionals, law enforcement, and judicial officers on the way in which systems help or hinder survivors in the post-separation period. We are proud to build the largest network of experts, expert witnesses, and legal scholars focused solely on helping survivors and children exit and recover from abuse.

Every day, thousands of children are court-ordered into unsupervised contact with abusers. Survivors must secure the safety of their children amidst structural barriers that enable abusers to perpetuate abusive acts in systemic ways. Intentionally and unintentionally, a lack of education for professionals working with survivors and children, poor policy that enables institutional abuse, and a lack of support for survivors navigating custody evaluations and court proceedings produce poor outcomes.

Survivor Resource Group is strategic in its mission to improve outcomes for survivors and children through wraparound support during custody evaluations and court proceedings. We organize evidence, draft narratives, and coach survivors throughout the evaluation process. In addition, we work with attorneys and experts on ways to present coercive control in court especially where financial and litigation abuse are present. Finally, we seek to educate family court professionals, attorneys, and other agencies on how coercive control and domestic abuse impact children.

Our Services

  • We focus on organizing, synthesizing and narrating survivor materials for custody and other family investigation proceedings.

  • We coach survivors on what to expect while testifying, how to clarify their narrative, and land mines to avoid on the stand.

  • We coach survivors through CFI/PRE interviews and home visits to ensure language is credible, consistent, and child-centered.

  • We specialize in relocation narratives that describe community, education, crime and other demographics of the proposed relocation area compared to the current area.

  • We link survivors with best-in-class DV expert witnesses to educate the Court on what DV and coercive control mean for children.

  • We educate law enforcement, legal professionals, and aspiring law students on domestic violence, coercive control, and its long-term impact on children.

  • We bring together advocacy groups, judicial officers, attorneys and other DV stakeholders to craft public policy that supports better outcomes for survivors and their children.

  • We recognize individuals in the trenches doing the hard work of supporting survivors and their children through our annual awards.

  • We draft school comparison reports, keeping in mind the context of your child’s education needs including IEP and 504 plans.

  • Having SRG in my corner was profoundly empowering. Their remarkable ability to analyze evidence and present it in a way that was both clear and effective for the judicial officer presiding over my case made a critical difference for our child. Beyond this, their team was steady and compassionate. I cannot overstate the impact of their support.”

    —Annie M., San Diego, CA

  • "Survivor Resource Group played a key role in preparing me for cross examination. As a survivor, I was nervous and intimidated by opposing counsel's constant and harmful litigation tactics. SRG helped me see the patterns of cross examination and how to stand firmly in my truth as a survivor."

    —Stephanie, Denver, CO.

  • “Survivor Resource Group's expertise helped inform the court on the ways in which schooling would impact our child long-term. I was able to secure an extremely favorable outcome for my child with special needs with the help of SRG's testimony.”

    —Brittany C., Denver, CO

  • "From the bottom of my heart, thank you for everything you did. Your report was amazing, and your testimony was flawless. …I have dealt with many expert witnesses and everyone was raving about your testimony. You did so well and even with opposing counsel asking terrible questions, you continued to bring it back to the child."

    —Wells Family Law, Denver, CO

  • "Survivor Resource Group helped me organize evidence in an emergency situation with my daughter. I was able to show my attorney and the court the patterns that affected the safety of my daughter. As the result of SRG's support, I was able to secure supervised visitation."
